Extreme Weather Hit 60 Million People in 2018, No Part of the World Spared

With some 60 million people affected by extreme weather in 2018, according to a new study, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) called for better management of the issue worldwide, in a statement published on Thursday [24 January 2019].

Women’s Discrimination and Struggle for Equality

Discrimination of women is common in all societies – rich western countries or poorer countries of Asia, Africa or Latin America. The level of discrimination of course varies – it can be subtle in the former countries and more pronounced in the latter.

Even most religions discriminate against women in some areas or the other. A Church normally would have male pastors or bishops and the Sunday service is generally carried out by men.

Similarly, women feel the brunt of discrimination in other major religions — Islam, Hinduism.

There is a very cruel practice that women face – divorce in the form of what is called triple talaq in several Islamic countries including India.

Enduring Freezing Winter in a War Zone

23 January 2019 – In Ukraine, extreme winter cold is making life harder for thousands of people whose lives have already been torn apart by conflict. Hoping to find safer places to live, families in the region have had to endure a battle for survival, in buildings without heat or electricity.

Since 2014, conflict in Ukraine has forced 1.5 million people to flee their homes, according to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

After five years, many of the displaced are often forced to choose between buying food and medicine or paying for heating.

‘No Country, No Region Can Tackle Global Challenges Alone’
